Romanian is a Romance language, having much in common with languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian. As in all Romance languages, the Romanian grammar is characterized by the presence of nominal and verbal inflections. However, there are also specific traits, such as the fact that Romanian is the only Romance language where definite articles are enclitic : that is, attached to the end of the noun (as in North Germanic languages ), instead of in front ( proclitic ). As regards the Romanian alphabet, this is based on the Latin one and is largely phonetic. Moreover, stressed vowels are not marked in writing except very rarely, in cases where misplacing the stress a word might change its meaning and if the meaning is not obvious from the context.
Romanian is spoken not only in Romania , but also in Moldova , Serbia , Ukraine , Spain , Italy , Israel , Russia , Canada or the United States , where there are large communities of Romanians living abroad.
